About Us

West of East is a duo whose music features vocals that mix the subtle, velvety style of Norah Jones with the power of Neko Case. Their songs pair intelligently crafted lyrics with acoustic guitars and are highlighted by a "Countrified-Folk" style of gritty electric guitar.

Simply put, it is two guitars, an amazing voice, and a bunch of great stories about life and its many meanings!Read more...

Sara Moilanen(Vocals and Guitar) has been involved in music, one way or another, for her whole life. It was in her early twenties however, that she began to discover her talents as a guitar player and songwriter, writing songs about all aspects of life and relationships. For nearly ten years she developed those talents while writing and performing music with the PeaceHill Musicians in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Her songs demonstrate a stark honesty and passion that walk the delicate line between confidence and vulnerability. Her knack for songwriting coupled with her powerful yet velvety voice makes you feel every emotion. In a review of one of her performances with The PeaceHill Musicians, it was once written in the Miami Herald that “Sara can sing the loneliness out of a Roy Orbison Song.”

As Tim Suchocki developed as a lead guitar player he began to create additional layers and add textures to many of Sara’s existing songs. At this point they began writing songs together and performing at open stages and acoustic music events around Milwaukee as “Sara and Tim.” Inspired by a lyric written by Sara’s longtime friend and Musical mentor, the late Boe Harbison, (“I asked someone where I might find peace, they said somewhere South and West of East, found by those who search the least…”) Sara and Tim began playing under the name “West of East.”

January Newsletter 1/15/10

We had a great holiday break and hope you did too. We got to spend some good quality time with family and friends, got out of town for a while, and had some very relaxing time off in general. We've had some exciting experiences in the last month and are looking forward to some good stuff coming up in January too. We're excited to tell you all about them but would also love to hear about what you have been doing.

Occasionally, we get responses back from people after we send the newsletter, telling us what they have going on and we REALLY enjoy it. So please let us know what your up to whether it's by responding to this newsletter, connecting with us on Facebook, sharing photos with us on Flickr, or whatever.

What The Deuce?
We recently had a "milestone experience" as musicians, and it was easily one of the coolest things that has ever happened to us. We heard ourselves on the radio! We had been getting phone calls and emails from friends and co-workers that were hearing our song "Love in the Twilight Zone" being played on WUWM, which is 89.7 here in Milwaukee, so we knew it was being played and in early December we finally heard it for ourselves.

We practiced it, we recorded it, we listened to the recording 500 million times while mixing the CD so hearing it this one time really shouldn't have been that big of a deal, but we can very honestly say that the first time you hear yourself on the radio, you'll be so excited that you'll want to scream!

The song was written by Sara's good friend Boe Harbison, who has passed away. We recorded it as the title track to the CD(along with his songs' "Paint Me Some Other Color" and "I Don't Need Your Love") as a way to remember him and help others discover his music. We both really wish Boe could have been here to hear it.

"Love in the Twilight Zone" can now be heard regularly on 89.7 WUWM on the "Cafe Tonight" show, the "Saturday at the Cafe" show and on the music only HD channel called "The Deuce." You can listen to any of these shows online from anywhere in the world at www.wuwm.com

We're Taking it on The Road

Mixed in there somewhere with all the vacationing we've been doing, we have started the surprisingly enormous task of planning a few tours. Since we're new to the whole "life on the road" thing and because Tim has one of those pesky day jobs, we're going to start out with baby steps and only do a few days at a time. We are planning the first one for April and who knows, we might just come through your town. We will pass along more details as we get them set in stone. If you know of a venue in your town that our style of music would fit well in, let us know!

Sara has been keeping very busy organizing and uploading our photos to Flickr. You'll find photos of our shows, photos of shows we've been out to see, and even some of us doing what we do when we're not playing in a band. If you have a Flickr account, add us as your contact so we can keep up-to-date with each other. Here is our address:
